History.
The German Sd.Kfz.8 was a heavy half-track developed in the mid-1930s as part of the Wehrmacht’s drive to motorise its artillery. Built mainly by Daimler-Benz and later by Krauss-Maffei, it was designed to tow loads of up to twelve tonnes across rough ground. One of its most famous roles was hauling the 8.8 cm Flak 36, a weapon that proved devastating in both anti-aircraft and anti-tank roles. The combination gave German forces exceptional mobility, allowing the Flak 36 to be rapidly deployed in North Africa, on the Eastern Front, and in Western Europe. Although expensive and produced in limited numbers, the Sd.Kfz.8 became an icon of German heavy artillery transport during the Second World War, and post-war military history studies.
